HND Childhood Practice - Evening

This is a two year qualification which is suitable for those who hold a Practitioner Qualification as specified by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) such as HNC Childhood Practice or SVQ Social Services: Children & Young People at SCQF Level 7. You should also be working in the early learning and care sector.

The course offers opportunities for qualified practitioners to enhance their professional knowledge and understanding beyond the practitioner role. The HND would ideally suit aspiring leaders or those looking to take on a senior role within a childhood practice setting and is designed to support the development of practitioners who wish to enhance their professional practice. This is a part-time blended learning course designed for individuals already working in the early learning and childcare or playwork sectors who are interested in progressing their careers.

The overall aim of this award is to develop your ability as a reflective practitioner, strengthen your research and study skills and increase your knowledge and skills in childhood practice in line with current research.

The Higher National Diploma in Childhood Practice at SCQF Level 8 covers areas such as enhanced professional practice, leadership and team working, integrated and collaborative working, policy to practice, and pedagogical approaches.

Year one and year two subjects include:

  • Childhood Practice: Leadership and Team Working
  • Childhood Practice: Integrated Working and Collaborative Practice
  • Childhood Practice: Policy to Practice
  • Childhood Practice: Pedagogical Approaches
  • Take Responsibility for the Continuing Professional Development of Yourself and Others
  • Sociology of Childhood
  • Supporting and Managing the Protection of Individuals
  • Childhood Practice: Graded Unit 2

Successful completion of the course may allow progression to programmes which are the recognised SSSC registration requirement for Manager/Lead Practitioner such as:

  • BA (Hons) Childhood Practice
  • PDA Childhood Practice SCQF Level 9

Applicants must hold a relevant registerable practitioner qualification accepted by Scottish Social Services Council such as HNC Childhood Practice or SVQ Social Services (Children and Young People) at SCQF Level 7. Applicants should also have a minimum of one year post-qualifying experience in a relevant job role in the childhood practice sector. Applicants will be assessed on personal statement, qualifications, experience and successful interview. Clear Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check required.

The cost for this course is £870 for the current academic session and covers the cost of 6 HN credits. Where there are additional credits undertaken, this will be charged at £145 per credit. Units to be undertaken will be discussed upon submission of application.

Student Paying

Fees of less than £150 must be paid in full. Payment by instalment is available, provided the course fee is £150 or greater. You can access a direct debit form here.

Instalments must be paid via direct debit over a 4-month period and an initial 30% deposit is required in order to secure your place. You will not be able to apply online if paying by direct debit please contact Evening Admissions - eveninginfo@forthvalley.ac.uk.

Employer Paying

If your employer is paying for your tuition fees, an Employers Agreement Form or letter from your employer must be submitted prior to or on enrolment. You can access the Employer Agreement Form here. Fee Waiver

You may be eligible for a fee waiver for your course if you meet the eligibility criteria which includes certain benefits such as Universal credit. Please click here to view the fee waiver document checklist which gives a list of the eligible benefits. Proof of these benefits must be submitted before a fee waiver can be processed.

Part-time Fee Grant

If you are aged 16 or over, living in Scotland and earn £25,000 a year or less you can access a Part-time Fee Grant from the Scottish Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS). The level of funding is dependent on the number of credits studied (for HNC level and above).

 

You can apply and access the full eligibility criteria via the part-time funding section of the SAAS website at: www.saas.gov.uk. Before you apply you will need information such as the course you will be attending and the number of SCQF credits for your course. If successful, a letter of award will be issued which will include how much funding you have been awarded.
