ESOL Introductory - (SCQF Level 3 Daytime)

Our ESOL classes are designed for students wishing to further their ESOL studies. It is designed for those who are at the stage in their learning when they are ready to develop language and communication skills at SCQF level 3. It provides a clear progressive pathway for those learners who aim to go on to study Level 4.

This course will extend your beginner language skills.  You will learn simple English language structure for routine contexts of everyday life, work and study. Our ESOL Courses allow you to develop your:

  • Speaking skills
  • Listening skills
  • Reading skills
  • Writing skills

You will also develop your knowledge of Grammar, Vocabulary and Use of English, in work and everyday situations.

This introductory course will help you take the first steps to develop your English skills, with a focus on everyday life, work and study.  There is no exam or assessment - just an opportunity to meet new people and improve your language skills in a supportive learning environment. We will actively encourage you to challenge yourself to even greater levels of fluency, but we totally appreciate that each student does so at their own pace.

We want you to enjoy your learning as an active participant – especially as you are just starting out on the road to fluency in spoken English - and we encourage you to bring your own ideas and interests into the learning environment. This vibrant and dynamic approach to your studies, will inspire you to even greater heights in the classroom.

The course is delivered over 2 hours during the day and class sizes have are a maximum of 20 students.

Please note that English is spoken at all times in class. 

  • 1 SQA Unit at SCQF Level 2 or 3

 

Expectations

Our course is designed to include at least 4 hours of study per week:

Daytime classes

  • Face to face contact: You will be expected to attend at least 80% of classes, 2 hours per week
  • Home self-directed study: You will be expected to study on your own, 2 hours per week

 

Assessments

You must be available for any internal assessments. If you miss an assessment it is your responsibility to arrange an alternative date with your lecturer.

  • Internal assessments will take place near the end of your course
  • Any reassessments will be arranged with you by your lecturer

  • Our SQA accredited courses allow you the opportunity to gain certification at your level of English to take to employers or other education providers.  

  • Successful completion of the course could lead to entry to another level ESOL course.
  • Progression to other courses within Forth Valley College.
  • Progression to other education providers. 

  • An initial assessment is given by a member of the College's ESOL team on application to ascertain your level of English. 

You will be assessed to ensure that you:

  • Are currently at ESOL level 3

or

  • Have successfully completed other SQA ESOL SCQF level 3 units

and

  • Have an understanding of study requirements for college

Course places are only secured after payment/funding has been arranged.

As per the College Tuition Fees and Refund Policy, tuition fees are non-refundable except under exceptional circumstances. Refer to our Tuition Fee Refund and Withdrawal Procedure on the College website.

Student Paying

Fees of less than £150 must be paid in full. Payment by instalment is available, provided the course fee is £150 or greater. You can access a direct debit form here.

Instalments must be paid via direct debit over a 4-month period and an initial 30% deposit is required in order to secure your place. You will not be able to apply online if paying by direct debit please contact Student Administation - residency@forthvalley.ac.uk.

Employer Paying

If your employer is paying for your tuition fees, an Employers Agreement Form or letter from your employer must be submitted prior to or on enrolment. You can access the Employer Agreement Form here. We ask that you complete the Employer Agreement Form and return via email to - residency@forthvalley.ac.uk.

Fee Waiver

You may be eligible for a fee waiver for your course if you meet the eligibility criteria which includes certain benefits such as Universal credit. Please click here to view the fee waiver document checklist which gives a list of the eligible benefits. Proof of these benefits must be submitted before a fee waiver can be processed.
